stranger in a strange land
four eyes filled with embers.
they lock and they’re aflame.
no words have filled the silence.
no one has said a name.
limbs caress and reach out.
digits, they entwine.
they’re touching and enfolding
but none of them are mine
i'm a stranger in a strange land.
words and body language.
subtleties of speech.
i see communication.
it’s all just out of reach.
i'm a stranger in a strange land.
i whisper words of warmth
but don’t feel the heat.
i’d give up anything
to taste the bittersweet.
i'm a stranger in a strange land.

Drive Across The Desert
04:02
|
|
||
the words came out
before i could stuff them back inside.
sarcasm dripping like bitter sap
from a tongue that knows where to strike.
you don’t really need me.
you’d be happy on your own
and i push you further from me
when i try to pull you close.
no matter how sharp, my words can’t open you.
your heart is a river deep and wide,
giving all you are.
i should be in the middle of that flood
but i’m thirsting from the shore.
can’t pierce the stone and make it flow,
won’t find it in the dust.
can’t pry it from you with my words.
i can only wait and trust.
let's drive across the desert tonight.
i know it’s dry. my eyes are clear.
when you’re ready, i’ll be here.
when you feel it’s right
drive through the night.
drive, when the time is right.
north, south, east or west, i can’t get close to you.
let's drive across the desert tonight.
the wind is dry. the stars are clear.
when you’re ready, i’ll be here.
when you feel it’s right.

White Bird
04:15
|
|||
a white tern afloat on the wind,
circling and circling again,
over murky green waters
and there’s no seeing through.
hard to get where you’re going
if there’s nothing fueling you.
i love to see that bird fly,
to watch his white wings in the sky.
i don’t know where i’m going
or why i’m still here
but the more that I keep looking,
the less i have to fear.
i’ll find my way back to the wind.
i’ll follow the white bird again.
i thought i would leave it behind,
leave it to hardier minds.
quit all the stumbling
and running around.
find someplace quiet with sturdier ground.
i’ll find my way back to the wind.
i’ll follow the white bird again.
the fog of confusion’s great weight
would break me and drive me to hate.
but the flight of those feathers
rising on air
could take me to places
i wouldn’t have dared.
i’ll find my way back to the wind.
i’ll follow the white bird again.

Odd Shaped Pieces
04:24
|
|
||
you wear your heart out on your sleeve.
i keep mine locked away from thieves.
you like thrills and you like races.
i like calm and quiet spaces.
we're just like that.
you and i are odd shaped pieces.
the ideal, we ain't it.
but you and i when we're close together,
honey, we fit.
i have my solitude and fears.
you have your oil and steel and gears.
i like lonesome; you like lively.
you let go and i hold tightly.
we're just like that.
you and i are odd shaped pieces.
the ideal, we ain't it.
but you and i when we're close together,
honey, we fit.
we're such a puzzle now
but we make it through.
when i fit my hand in yours
i know that we are true.
you and i are odd shaped pieces.
the ideal, we ain't it.
but you and i when we're close together
honey, we fit.

The Darkness And The Sun
04:10
|
|
||
you were the fire in the hearth,
a door against the cold,
four walls to keep out the world
you were a book of ancient truth,
wiser than the sun,
a hero’s tale of how the west was won.
you were the only one.
you were all of these and none.
you were the darkness and the sun.
you were an unexpected storm
on a sunny summer day,
deep and dark, boiling black and gray
you were a windless open sea,
no breeze to fill the sails
and hope to reach your shore always failed.
you were the troubled one.
you were all of these and none.
you were the darkness and the sun.
there were things i should have said
but i learned too late you were also the thread.
you were the faithful one.
you were all of these and none.
you were the darkness and the sun.

Sometimes The Wolf
04:11
|
|
||
pure and lovely
like freshly fallen snow
but don’t be fooled sweet child
the earth is dead below.
sweet and wholesome
like berries bright and red
but don’t be fooled sweet child,
one bite and you’ll be dead.
sometimes the wolf
looks like a friend.
sometimes your love
means nothing in the end.
bow to your betters.
they’re truthful and wise
but don’t be fooled sweet child.
it’s all a grand disguise.
don’t give up the journey.
the journey is the goal
but don’t be fooled sweet child.
we’re all just growing old
sometimes the wolf
looks like a friend.
sometimes your love
means nothing in the end.
sometimes the wolf
looks like a friend.
sometimes you give your heart
and it’s nothing in the end.
pure and lovely
like freshly fallen snow,
but don’t be fooled sweet child.
they’ll lay you down below.

Get Back
03:33
|
|
||
i’ve heard it said
that once you leave it’s the end.
there ain’t no going back,
you can’t pick it up again.
i’ve heard it said
that i should just move along.
that i’ll find greener grass
now that i have moved on.
but i want to get back,
i just want to get back,
i want to get right back to loving you.
i took some time
to find where it all went wrong,
to try and find a space
where i felt that i belonged.
what i found
was something i should have known,
that when i'm next to you it’s the closest thing to home.
so i want to get back,
i just want to get back,
i want to get right back to loving you.
all the reasons that i had to say why
i was saying goodbye
all sound like lies.
i want to get back,
i just want to get back,
i want to get right back to loving you.

Apologies
03:19
|
|
||
i apologize
for leaving you there to die.
i thought you were
gone for sure.
what a surprise
to find that you're still alive.
what a delight
to see you so full of life.
hey i know things might seem bad
but i am always there for you.
you know i’ve got your back
and that i’ll always be so true.
i’m sorry, friend,
that your pension is at an end.
i would lend you some
but then I would have none.
i think you know
that i’ll always love you so.
but it can’t be helped,
gotta look out for myself.
hey i know things might seem bad
but i am always there for you.
you know i’ve got your back
and that i’ll always be so true.

the cottonwood limbs are bare.
bare bones in the air.
the whole world is dressed in shades of brown
and i’m thinking hard about skipping town.
the harvest is long since dead,
just empty husks in a garden bed.
trying to find a reason to smile
but i'm telling you now it might be a while.
i’m waiting
for a winter that will never come,
a spring that won’t be sprung,
a summer on the run.
my heart is laid open, bare.
i would have thought this heart could take me anywhere
but now I see it’s all been a lie.
i’ve never been a queen. i’m a pawn just getting by.
i’m waiting
for a winter that will never come,
a spring that won’t be sprung,
a summer on the run.
i’m waiting
for a season to try
to open our eyes,
a reason to do more
than get by.
all the leaves have fallen down,
and i'm thinking hard about skipping town.
